August 14, 2024
Monticello, NY (August 13, 2024) – On Monday August 12th, Monticello Raceway hosted New York Sire Stakes for Two-Year-Old Trotting Colts for $102,500 and two splits of the $20,000 Excelsior Stakes.
The lone Sire Stake event went to post with five entrants vying for top money, Seven Layer made a break behind the gate, was late catching it, and handicapped from there. Karinchak with Mark Macdonald in the bike had the rail and was first to the lead, he took the small single file pack through splits of 31 – 1:01. Down the backside Tyler Buter pulled the 1-1 favorite BJM’S Lil Man which in turn flushed Variegated hitting the next station in a tepid 1:30.3, briefly in the paddock turn Variegated was even with Karinchak but that didn’t last long as Karinchak continued to trot on and away with a last quarter of 28.4 to score a two-length win in 1:59.2 over Variegated, with the 1-1 favorite BJM’S Lil Man getting up for the show spot. Karinchak is a son of Chapter Seven – Sianna Hanover who was bred by Steve Jones, he is trained and partially owned by his trainer Raymond Schnittker along with fellow owner Ted Gewertz and Arden Homestead Stable of Delhi, NY. Karinchak picked up a new speed badge in the process of 1:59.2 with Mark Macdonald in the bike and pushed his earning to almost $75,000 with two more Sire Stakes races before the final.
The first dash of the $20,000 Excelsior Series saw Bomb Proof made a break shortly after the start leaving Cheques In Limbo (B. Boyd) on the lead only momentarily as Mane Man Charlie and Jason Bartlett pulled from the pocket to take the lead. Low Inside was in no great hurry for the lead and ambled his way to the top past the opening panel of 29.3 with the pack in single panel passing the half in 1:01. Habanero Blue (T. Buter) got things going at the 5/8 maker making his first over bid, as Low Inside hit the next maker in 1:32 and was still the one to catch at the top of the lane, Mane Man Charlie took aim on the leader from the passing lane. The pair trotted in tandem down the stretch but it took a tight photo to determine that Low Inside was the winner by a scant nose in 2:03 – $2.80. Low Inside is trained and driven by Dan Daley for owners Ann Mari Daley, Todd M Van Alstyne and Margaret Waterbury. Fourth seasonal win for the son of Devious Man – Nowerland Kristen that was bred by Cherry Hill Farm of New York.
The second division of the Excelsior Stakes saw Mattersman (B. Boyd) leaving from the rail quickly grabing the lead and started to extend his lead to four-lengths after an opening panel of 30, shortly thereafter Mattersman broke stride in the paddock turn. Doctor Strange (J. Stark Jr.) the post time favorite inherited the lead taking them to the next station in 1:00, approaching the five eighths pole Poblano sitting third came off the rail to come first over 1:32.1, Tyler Buter driving Magic Brillance was three deep turning for home with Poblano in the middle of the track, a late charge from Magic Brillance made it interesting but Poblano outsprinted him barely as he held on for the win in 2:00 – $7.20. Poblano (Chapter Seven – Shishito – Father Patrick) is trained by Per Engblom and earned his maiden win in the process.
The last New York Sire Stakes for the 2024 season at Monticello is next Monday August 19th, when Two-Year-Old Trotting Fillies close out the season, post time will be 12:10 pm.
