This week’s Open pace was a 7 horse affair, the wagering public made #6 GDS Thunder GB the post time favorite, he was a winner last start in NW 9000 L5. He started from post 6 with Michael Merton in the bike for trainer Ken Koch. KJ Hunter, who is seeking his first win of the New Year with regular pilot Jimmy Taggart Jr. in the bike started from the 2 hole. He grabbed the lead from Trevors Ace past the opening panel in 27.2 and led every step of the way to trip the beam in 1:56.2 – $7.70.
Thomas Merton gave the backers of Rock On Lou their money’s worth, he was four length’s off the leader first over gapped from the leader going into the paddock turn. Through Merton‘s urging Rock On Low unleased a last quarter of 29.1 to narrow the gap, losing by a only a head in a spirited stretch drive with Sauvignon Bluechip finished 3rd. The 2024 Pacer of the Year Air Guitar scored in 1:57.4 – $ 3.20 with Greg Merton for trainer Mark Ford.
Special Graduate won his fourth race of the young season in 1:59.3 – $8.50 with Adam Moeykens in the bike for trainer Dave Dziengiel. Greg Merton led all drivers with a triple, McGwire Sowers scored a driving double.
